Power grid failure in Northern India worst in a decade

"The grid failure happened after 10 years. It earlier happened in 2002. That time it took about 16 hours to restore the grid." 

 

Northern grid failure brings 500 trains to a halt

The failure of the northern grid brought to a halt more than 500 trains, including 300 passenger trains, on Monday morning.

Grid failure in a power system generally occurs when much or all of the high voltage transmission grid is forced out of service, thereby isolating the load it would normally serve. Total grid failure, is extremely infrequent, could also occur the way it happened this time in the northern grid. Grid failure could also be the result of the almost simultaneous loss of multiple generating units or plants however this is less likely to be the reason for a large grid failure.

Grid systems are designed to, at a minimum, survive the loss of the most important element at all times. Indeed, most grid systems have shown the capability to survive the loss of several independent elements simultaneously. All grid apparatus is protected by various overlapping redundant protection schemes so that the failed element is removed from service as quickly as possible

Power cuts, black outs and load shedding have been experienced periodically and chronically adversely affects the country's economical growth.

You start Energy Conservation at home, carry it to your work place, manage at your visiting hubs....

Switch of all the electrical & electronic utilities when not in use.

Please even do not put them in Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep mode!

Make sure that you have put the switches in off mode.

Do not keep the open loop system in any of the electrical unit!

Remove the charging plug-in aids once the charging is done.

Specially switch off the TV sets at the switch boards & not just with the remote!

Practice simple things. Cultivate these as habit. These small steps would definitely make our electric bills lighter. This in turn leads to minimal Power Consumption at home. If each one of us contribute, the whole state would require small power! The grid is not overloaded. No body is going to be indiscipline drawing them. Logic becomes simple.
